Buying a home raises a lot of questions. One thing I’ve noticed is that many of those questions come up while we’re standing together during the home inspection.
- Why are you spending so much time outside?
- Should I be worried about that crack?
- Why do gutters and downspouts matter so much?
- Do I really need a sewer camera inspection if everything seems to be draining?
Those are the kinds of questions you’ll find answered here.
Some of these articles explain common defects and maintenance issues. Others are based on the conversations I have with buyers during New Jersey home inspections. My goal is always the same—to explain what I’m seeing, why it matters, and help you better understand the home you’re buying.
One thing you’ll probably notice as you read through these articles is that I spend a lot of time explaining why something matters. Houses work as complete systems. What I find outside often helps explain what I find later in the basement, crawlspace, or attic. A loose gutter or a short downspout may seem minor today, but over time it can contribute to much larger problems if it’s ignored.
I’m not trying to convince you that every house has major problems. In fact, most don’t.
A home inspection isn’t about finding reasons not to buy a house. It’s about understanding the condition of the home, recognizing which issues are routine, identifying the ones that deserve more attention, and helping you make an informed decision.
Whether you’re buying your first home or your fifth, I hope you’ll find these articles helpful.
Every house tells a story.
My job is to recognize the clues, understand what they mean, and explain them to my clients before they buy the home.
